Domestic service workers Act passed by the National Assembly

Recognized as a legal worker after 68 years
Rising costs will increase household burdens

Reporter, Park In-hye,

Domestic service workers such as housekeepers, caregivers will be recognized as ‘legal workers.’ This is 68 years since the enactment of the Labor Standards Act, and 11 years since the first amendment to the related law was first initiated in 2010.

The National Assembly held a plenary session on the 21st and passed the ‘Legislation of the
Employment Improvement Act for Domestic service workers.’ Although domestic service workers were classified as ‘workers,’ they were not protected by labor-related laws and were socially held as 'informal workers.’ As up to 600,000 domestic service workers are now subject to the Labor Standards Act and entered the category of workers within the boundaries of the law and system.

Now, domestic service workers can receive the minimum wage and four major insurance coverage. They will also be guaranteed legal breaks and receive annual paid leave and severance pay.
